Re: Alahosts.com going away?

We've been off of the old platform for years. I hope the migration goes well for anyone still there.

Re: Alahosts.com going away?

Hi Saphh,
There really is a lot here. I wonder if we could do something similar for cPanel servers. I've written a lot of server candy scripts for cpanel that I can share. Most of us old timers wouldn't learn much from them but there are some gems. I won't make any decisions at this time.

Alahosts.com going away?

I've have taken this site down a while back had it not been for the fact that I bought an Alabanza hosting server and needed a lot of the info here to get me back up to speed on the old configuration. I'm wondering if anyone still comes here to check on things? Also, if you're selling your hosting c...

I'm Back

Just when I thought I was off of the Alabanza platform... Another host was kind enough to allow me to acquire his company. I love this business.

Free from the Navisite Frankenstein.

I finally bit the bullet and migrated my last group of clients off of the Frankenstein called "Alabanza/Navisite/TimeWarner" and all it's missives. I would have stayed if they provided a reasonable turn around time on their support requests but I can't wait a week for a reply to a ticket and weeks f...

Re: Set default permissions on created files SSH putty vi touch

I believe "umask" handles the default perms for files/folders. When migrating I often find the perms messed up. Here's a quick fix on a cpanel server. [root /cmd]# cat fixperms #!/bin/bash # Version 2.0 - better handling of add-on domains, plus a little feedback on the process. USER="$1" if [ "$USER...

Re: Department of Defence allowed in by default

I didn't get a good explanation but I gave up trying after going back and forth. I don't think anyone was doing anything bad. Just a weird thing. Who knows, maybe I did that myself some time back... on all my servers. Weird though.

Department of Defence allowed in by default

If you run this command on an LW server, you'll get a peculiar response: # iptables -L ALLOWIN -n --line-numbers | grep 205.0.0.0 1 ACCEPT all -- 205.0.0.0/8 0.0.0.0/0 Who owns that IP range? Migration of 230 accounts and about 400 websites from off site account backups to a bare metal server in 4 days. Only Liquid Web could do this. They performed flawlessly.

Re: NEW NIGHTMARE

It's Monday and in 10 minutes we're going to repoint the DNS to the new server. Can't wait to be off that old wreck and away from that kind of service. They just could not provide the standard of service a real hosting environment requires. I guess that's not their business even though they say it i...

That's excellent. If you remind me in a week, I can see if there's an update to that software. I'm in the middle of a migration today.

Re: Who has VPS in a Canadian datacenter?

I use iWeb but only for a backup server. No control panels at all. Just command line. It's cheap, does the job, works, no support is provided unless I am willing to pay $75/hr, or the issue is with their network. So far, I haven't had to pay. 1 TB space, $85/mo. My understanding is that they're a go...

NEW NIGHTMARE

I bought a host in Feb. They had their servers at a big data center. All seemed good. Turns out the company providing the servers are just renting cage space for their server because they are located 1000 miles away. That's all fine until something goes bad. And this week something went terribly bad...

You did want to move these forums to a specific server any way right? Maybe upgrade the forum software while doing so..
Not sure what you have in mind. The server's mine and the software's up to date.

Someone needs to verify people as best as he/she can. Someone has to lead. Beyond that, as long as folks behave it works. I've laid out who I am, what my companies are, where I live, how many clients I have, given away software and code, laid it all out and I haven't regretted it once. If you're goi...

Re: quietude

Sapphire, I totally understand and agree. What we did with Alahosts was break down many of the "competitors are evil" walls and just laid it out for all to see. Sadly, the cPanel communities don't fully understand that there really is enough business to go around and helping others is not a zero sum...

We sell RVSiteBuilder. It's OK. Support isn't great. I've removed it from one server to save money. Clients who want it will be migrated to the one server that has it.

Um, better to offer something than lose the client. Although it seems like bad up front cost and risk of losing clients to weebly.

When you say log, I'm assuming you means /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup/* Look for "WARN" and "Cannot open file" I have a script that does several things, among them is a "dry run" of rsync to compare the files themselves. You should be able to glean the info from my variables: rsync -au -progress ...

I spoke to them about getting a server in Amsterdam in hopes of avoiding U.S. Patriot Act but they are a U.S. company and must follow U.S. laws even with servers in other countries. Amsterdam isn't fully on line yet but it's coming. Not sure why.

Yes, I'm afraid so.
HD1: 2x 250GB SSD Software RAID 1

Means to me that (HD1) Hard Drive Number 1 (not one and two) will be made up of two drives configured in RAID 1, resulting in 250 GB total storage.

I just ordered a similar server. They really make their money in the "configuration fee".
