Mosso... what you think

So a while back Rackspace had a big buzz about some sort of groundbreaking hosting system and they were inviting beta testers... I applied and never heard back. More then a year ago.

Today I get an email from them saying thier new system is called Mosso.com and it is fully functional.

I look at the features and this system looks like it kicks you know what.

Would like some feedback from all you pros out there. A big thing I see is no ssh or root access, which I don't use now anyway :-)

Other then that it looks great, you can even pay them $3 a month per domain to provide your support for you.

So for $100/month you get 80gb space, 2000gb transfer, unlimited domains, linux/windows hosting, control panel software, billing, 24x7 support with phone or chat support.

Also I do not knwo how long this will last but a rep gave me a username and password to demo the system.

Sounds very competitive. I've been talking with AT&T about a high bandwidth/disk space solution. But your offer with managed support from Rackspace sounds very enticiing.

So far after test driving...

Pros:
1) $100/month for 80gb space 2000gb transfer
2) Pretty, user friendly interface
3) Chat with support right in CP
4) Can create unlimited domains
5) Can register domains directly through thier interface
6) Can setup your own packages
7) They provide optional white label billing/tech support services

Webmail comes standard with ClamAV and Spamassin

Cons:
1) Cannot manage DNS
2) No SSH or Root access
3) Cannot setup merchant account in thier system
4) Domain names cost $10/year
5) Virtual Name servers not reccomended (but doable they say)
6) Overall still in development, they have alot of "on thier list" features that are implemented yet.

seemed like it took long for the control panel to load.... and going from one section of it to another seemed to me like the graphics took a long time to load.

maybe why the dsm is all text... built for speed :-)

All mentioned above... plus...
Support for ASP.NET and MS-SQL Server

Con's:

You can't customize anything, debug anything, take a look at email logs and so on...
It's just like the Ibiz hosting model... $50 for unlimited domains, however their IP addresses are constantly being listed from SpamCop (the cheaper and centralized, the more probability to have a listing on an RBL).

yeah i guess thats a big con... if they share IP's, which they do then you are screwed if the other guys on your ip are abusing the system.

That doesn't mean so much. The way mail is setup at ALA, if anyone abuses email they will block the server ip, hence everyone.

Yeap, however you have control over who uses the email server, if there's any abuser, you can simply kick him out and notify the problem has been solved to RBL's..

We tried a Mosso account for about a month this spring. Some very nice features, and some pretty big holes. They had a major service outage a month or so ago, down for nearly an entire day. It's really still a beta product; there are a slew of things on their to do list (and some not - no reselling functionality planned). If I were a web developer looking to provision a few dozen design clients it might be attractive later this year; as a web host I think there are just too many limitations, at least for now.

Yeah I got from talking to them that it is geared more towards a web designer that wants to host a few clients on his own.... and not for large web hosting providers.

Now see, this is why the RSM should be made available for less. If it was free, I'd pass it to my clients for free and hook them on the "alabanza automation" that has me hooked.
